| What is the purpose of Portal Applicance Testing? |
The purpose of Portable Appliance Testing is to ensure that portable and
transportable electricial equipment is maintained in a safe condition so
as to avoid any hazard to person’s or property
Portable Electricial Appliance means electricial equipment that can or could
be moved from place to place e.g. office machinery (computers, copiers, fax machines),
kettles, extension leads etc, usually having a lead with a plug attached
The Safety, Health Welfare at Work regulation 2001 Statutory Instrument number 188 2001 states that :
Every portable appliance must be tested once a year
The results must be held for 5 years
The resuts must also be made available for inspection by inspectors of the HSA
A qualified PAT Testing Ireland electrician would undertake this as part of combined inspection and testing
Signs to be looked for include:
Damage, e.g. cuts, abrasion to the cable covering
Damage to the plug e.g the casing is cracked or the pins are bent
Non-standard joints including taped joints in the cable
The outer covering (sheath) of the cable not being gripped where it enters the plug or equipment and/or coloured wires visible
Damage to the outer cover of the equipment or obvious loose parts or screws
Overheathing (burn marks or staining)
